Shadowing Genetic Counselors

Finding a GC to shadow is a daunting task. However, the experience gives you some points of reflection you can add to your personal statements. In addition, I’ve found that it’s given me good context for the material I’m learning in my GC program. I shadowed a Cancer Genetic counselor for about 5 days. Here are some the of the steps I took.

  1. Reach out to Genetic Counselors who are interested in meeting with students and request an informational interview. This gives you a good opportunity to learn more about their career path and see if shadowing them might be a good experience for you. In addition, the G.C. will also get a better sense of your interest and areas of expertise. If the GC offers the opportunity to shadow them during the conversation, fabulous! However, remember that they may be working with students already and not have the additional time for shadowing.

  2. Follow up with a thank you email. Gratitude is so important. If you felt that you and the GC had a good rapport, consider asking if you could shadow them in your thank you email.

Creative Solutions

Use available video sessions to create your own shadowing experience.

✅ The Master Genetic Counselor Series has examples of cardiovascular, cancer, and prenatal, genetic counseling sessions. Consider asking a GC who met with you for an informational interview if they would be willing to discuss questions you have about a few of the videos in the series.

✅ Liann Hoang Jimmons as part of degree requirements for a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling at Boise State University created this simulated Genetic Counseling video.

✅ Listen to Podcasts such as GC chat and DNA Today

I used both of the strategies above to ensure that I was ready to change careers and to identify a shadowing opportunity. Hopefully, that helps as you continue your journey to become a GC.
